Lock to Lite Clearance Calculator

Find the machining clearance between the lock and the lite cutout. The diagram redraws to scale as you type, and the optional checks compare the result against fire-listing minimums and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) height rules, measured above finished floor (AFF).

Fire-label requirements

Fire-labeled doors must keep a minimum lock-to-cutout distance, set by the core’s listing — the check compares the clearance against it:

  • Mineral core — 5" minimum
  • Agrifiber core — 4" minimum
  • 20-minute core — 2 1/8" with a metal lite kit, 5" with a wood kit

Guidance only — fire-label requirements depend on the door’s listing. Please contact us to confirm the requirements for your project.

ADA requirements
  • Heights are above finished floor (AFF), adjusted for how the lite kit’s frame sits in the cutout (the door hangs 1/8" below the frame head).
  • Visible glass — 43" max. The glass must start at 43" AFF or lower, so the lite can be seen through from a seated position.
  • Smooth bottom rail — 10" min. The flush, snag-free surface that wheelchair footrests and cane tips push against must run at least 10" up from the floor, so the kit frame’s bottom sits at or above 10" AFF.

The wood kits’ lip / moulding dimensions are preset to the standards and can be edited; clearing a box restores the standard. When the fire check is on, only lite kits matching the fire core’s listing are offered (the metal kits for a metal lite kit; Wood Lip or Flush Wood for a wood kit).

Guidance only. Please contact us to confirm the ADA requirements for your project.
