Solid Core
The everyday cores for interior architectural doors — from economical particle board to Timberstrand, the strongest and heaviest option for heavy-duty use and large cutouts. NAUF options are available for low-toxicity applications.
The least expensive solid core and suitable for most interior architectural doors. Regular thicknesses are 1-3/4″, 1-3/8″, and 2-1/4″.
NAUF particle board is available for special low-toxicity applications.
Made from lumber staves. Available with NAUF properties where the architect or local code specify materials with no added urea formaldehyde.
Doors come with blocking for the lock unless there is a center internal rail.
The strongest and heaviest core — used for heavy-duty applications and doors with large cutouts for windows, panels, or louvers. Made with waterproof, NAUF glue, so it suits non-conditioned spaces and meets NAUF requirements.
Regular thicknesses are 1-3/4″, 1-3/8″, and 2-1/4″, but almost any thickness can be accommodated.
Fire Core
Rated cores for 3/4-hour, 1-hour, and 1-1/2-hour fire doors, manufactured as neutral pressure (NP) or positive pressure (PP). 20-minute fire labels are also available with solid core doors.
Mineral fire doors consist of the mineral core itself, with lengths of Firestop material used for stiles, rails, and blocking.
Most 45-minute doors and single 60-minute doors can be made using Agrifiber construction. Fire doors are manufactured as neutral pressure (NP) or positive pressure (PP).
Hollow Core
Chosen when weight and cost matter more than strength and stability — we do supply them, built with solid wood stiles and rails, and reinforced with Timberstrand and a center rail on doors 3'0″ × 7'0″ or larger. (Fair warning: our office staff will try to talk you out of hollow core doors whenever possible!)
Built with high-grade honeycomb and solid wood stiles and rails — not compressed cardboard or MDF. The better choice if a hollow core door is a must; a well-built honeycomb door is almost the same price as a basic solid core door.
The cheaper of the two hollow cores. It has more temperature- and noise-insulating qualities than honeycomb — but nowhere near as effective as solid core.
